Apple loses another copyright lawsuit in China: Xinhua

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A Chinese court has fined Apple Inc 1 million yuan ($160,400) for hosting third-party applications on its App Store that were selling pirated electronic books, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.
Apple is to pay compensation to eight Chinese writers and two companies for violating their copyrights, the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court ruled on Thursday, Xinhua said.
Earlier in the year, a group of Chinese authors filed the suit against Apple, saying an unidentified number of apps on its App Store sold unlicensed copies of their books. The group of eight authors was seeking 10 million yuan in damages.
"We are disappointed at the judgment. Some of our best-selling authors only got 7,000 yuan. The judgment is a signal of encouraging piracy," Bei Zhicheng, a spokesman for the group, told Reuters.
Apple said in a statement that it takes copyright infringement complaints "very seriously".
"We're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights," Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said.
China has the world's largest Internet and mobile market by number of users, but piracy costs software companies billions of dollars each year.
Apple, whose products enjoy great popularity in China, has faced a string of legal headaches this year. In July, Apple paid 60 million yuan to a Chinese firm, Proview Technology, to settle a long-running lawsuit over the iPad trademark in China.

Huawei partner offered embargoed HP gear to Iran

(Reuters) - A major Iranian partner of Huawei Technologies offered to sell at least 1.3 million euros worth of embargoed Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to Iran's largest mobile-phone operator in late 2010, documents show.
China's Huawei, the world's second largest telecommunications equipment maker, says neither it nor its partner, a private company registered in Hong Kong, ultimately provided the HP products to the telecom, Mobile Telecommunication Co of Iran, known as MCI. Nevertheless, the incident provides new evidence of how Chinese companies have been willing to help Iran evade trade sanctions.
The proposed deal also raises new questions about Shenzhen-based Huawei, which recently was criticized by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee for failing to "provide evidence to support its claims that it complies with all international sanctions or U.S. export laws."
At least 13 pages of the proposal to MCI, which involved expanding its subscriber billing system, were marked "Huawei confidential" and carried the company's logo, according to documents seen by Reuters. In a statement to Reuters, Huawei called it a "bidding document" and said one of its "major local partners," Skycom Tech Co Ltd, had submitted it to MCI.
The statement went on to say, "Huawei's business in Iran is in full compliance with all applicable lawsand regulations including those of the U.N., U.S. and E.U. This commitment has been carried out and followed strictly by our company. Further, we also require our partners to follow the same commitment and strictly abide by the relevant laws and regulations."

Fifth-gen iPad reportedly due in March along with Retina iPad mini

Rumors that a second-generation iPad mini with a Retina display is set to launch ahead of Apple’s typical annual schedule next year have been swirling, and now it appears Apple’s (AAPL) full-size iPad may be sticking to its new semiannual release schedule. According to a report from Japanese blog Makotakra that cites an anonymous “inside source,” Apple plans to launch a new thinner, lighter 9.7-inch iPad as soon as March 2013. The fourth iPad model was just released last month alongside the iPad mini, but March was also suggested in recent Retina iPad mini rumorsMakotakra states that the new iPad will adopt styling queues from the current iPad mini model, unifying the look of Apple’s larger tablet with the iPad mini and iPhone 5.

Apple’s new manufacturing tech opens the door for a curved iPhone

The Samsung (005930Galaxy Nexus/Nexus S and Dell (DELLVenue Pro had two things in common: First, they were both terrific smartphones that never really lived up to their potential in terms of sales volume, having been overshadowed by more popular phones. Second, they each sported unique curved glass displays — the Galaxy Nexus’ screen is concave while the Venue Pro’s is convex — that added a unique look and feel to the handsets. Rumors that Apple (AAPL) may be working to launch an iPhone with a curved glass face have swirled in the past, but a new patent recently uncovered by Patently Apple confirms that the company is at least toying with the idea of adding a curved smartphone to its future iPhone lineup.
The patent describes a manufacturing process that ditches chemicals by combining heat with a molding mechanism that shapes thin glass. The process is simpler and more efficient than current technologies used to curve glass panels, and it is also far safer.
The fact that Apple is actively working on this technology is hardly a guarantee that we’ll see it implemented in the iPhone 9 or some other future model. Even if the company does put its new patent into practice, it might appear in products other than the iPhone.
Curving glass is a great way to make larger displays more accessible to the user, however, and at the rate the market is shifting, the iPhone 5′s bump to 4 inches likely won’t be the last sizing tweak we see from Apple moving forward.

Mark Cuban: Nokia Lumia 920 ‘crushes’ the iPhone 5

In the eyes of outspoken entrepreneur Mark Cuban, the battle for smartphone supremacy has been fought and won… by Nokia (NOK). While hosting an AMA session on Reddit — a series of posts where the original poster instructs Reddit users to “Ask Me Anything” — Cuban, who famously sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo (YHOO) for around $5 billion at the height of the dot-com boom, was asked what kind of laptop he uses. “I have a MacBook Air, but am trying the new Acer with Windows 8 [laptop],” wrote Cuban. “I really, really like Windows 8 on my phone. I have [two] phones. First isSamsung (005930) the [second] was an iPhone 5. The new Nokia with windows replaced my iPhone 5.” When asked to elaborate, Cuban said that the Lumia 920 “crushes the iPhone 5. Not even close.”

How Massage Therapy Can Relieve Work Stress

How Massage Therapy Can Relieve Work Stress

Introduction Anyone who has ever had a job in any industry knows a little something about work-related stress. Some types of jobs are more prone to stress than others, but all will experience it from time to time.

Introduction Whether you’re the vice president of a big company, a cashier in that same company or the person who cleans the floors once everyone goes home, stress is a factor. Sometimes the stress is mental and sometimes it is physical, but you must find a way to ease it or you may find yourself in a serious predicament.

Introduction One solution that more and more people seem to turn to for work stress is massage therapy. When you get into the details, it almost seems as if massage therapy was made for work stress.

Common Work Stress Symptoms According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can have serious effects on your body, your mood and your behaviour. The stresses that you experience in the workplace may result in: Muscle tension and pain Headaches Chest pains Upset stomach Loss of libido Fatigue Sleep disruptions Anxiety Depression Restlessness Anger Inability to focus

What Is Massage Therapy? According to the Registered Massage Therapist’s Association of Ontario, “massage therapy is a comprehensive intervention involving a range of techniques to manipulate the soft tissues and joints of the body.”

What Is Massage Therapy? The purpose of massage therapy is to relieve pain, rehabilitate, augment and maintain physical function. The different techniques provide relief for many different ailments, stemming from stress, overuse of muscles and several chronic pain syndromes. The website states that between 17 and 23 percent of Canadians have used massage therapy at some point, and it is a generally accepted form of treatment.

How Stress Affects Health The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website list several health issues that can result from too much stress in your life. One of the things that make work stress so serious is that we typically spend 40 or more hours per week on the job. This prolonged exposure to a stressful environment can make the health effects even worse, because your body doesn’t get a chance to switch it off like in an immediate danger “fight or flight” type of situation.

How Stress Affects Health Your body has a pre-programmed response to stress that is often referred to as the “Generalized Stress Response”. The effects on your body include: Increased blood pressure Increased fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood Faster heartbeat and respiration Faster blood clotting Increased stomach acids Increased blood sugar production Inflammation

How Stress Affects Health When you add these kinds of effects to the symptoms listed earlier, it’s easy to see how prolonged exposure can result in serious health problems.

Massage Therapy Treatment If the effects of work-related are getting to you physically or emotionally, ask your doctor to refer you to a registered massage therapist. The Chiro Med Rehab Centre lists the following conditions as some of the ones that are treatable by massage therapy. Headache Neck pain Postnatal pain Low back pain Lymphatic drainage Repetitive stress injuries Shoulder pain Stress

Massage Therapy Treatment As you can see, several of the symptoms and effects produced by stress in the workplace are the exact same ones that massage therapy can treat effectively. Some work benefits even allow for a certain amount for massage therapy on a yearly basis. Check with your benefits, check with your doctor, and go see a massage therapist to help relieve the effects of your work stress sooner rather than later.

Here are a few reasons -  Genetic reasons  Stress  HormonalMisbalance  Lack of regular exercise  Retention of too much water in the body  Unhealthy lifestyle These are just a few reasons for fat gain in the body. When you eat slowly, you will know for yourself when you are full. Avoid eating in front of the television as people tend to eat more when they are doing something else other than eating.  Never sit with all the utensils with food in it. Serve yourself food on a plate and eat it from that. Avoid second serves.  Try to have a light dinner as the body tends to store fat during the night time and burn calories in the morning. Also, try to have your dinner early. For More Information visit: - IntuitiveDietitian.com

How to Deal with Dental Anxiety

Introduction Many people who don’t suffer from dental anxiety can’t understand why those who do don’t just “suck it up” and push their way through the appointment. After all, you only have to go twice a year. Of course, people who do have anxiety about the dentist know that it isn’t even remotely that simple. If you are one of the thousands who feel terrified at the thought of the dentist chair, here are some proven tips for dealing with your anxiety, that others use everyday.

Open Communication According to Everyday Health, maintaining an open dialogue with your dentist about treatment options helps to give you a sense of power and control over the situation. If it makes you feel better to know everything that’s going to happen, let the dentist know. If you’d rather be kept in the dark, let her know that, too.

Open Communication You may even want to come up with a signal to use with your dentist and hygienist to let them know when you’re feeling antsy

Effective Pain Medication The website WebMD says that one of the primary reasons people avoid seeing the dentist is due to fear of pain. Luckily, there are a number of effective pain medications available to dentists so they can numb just about any degree of pain before it really has a chance to take effect.

Effective Pain Medication The most common pain medications available at the dentist’s office include: Topical Anesthetic – these are applied with a cotton swab and are used to numb a spot in your mouth on your gums before minor work is done. Electronically Delivered Anesthesia – this is also known as TENS, and it is designed as an alternative to a local anesthetic injection. Nitrous Oxide – this is also called ‘laughing gas’ and it is inhaled through a facemask to help patients feel relaxed and remove anxiety. This is one of the more common forms of sedation, according to WebMD.

Effective Pain Medication Intravenous Sedation – this is an injection of a sedative into the arm or hand to control pain and anxiety. This may be used for more involved dental procedures, or for extremely anxious patients. General Anesthesia – general anesthesia means the patient is put to sleep for the entirety of the dental procedure. Most patients who get general anesthesia have their procedure in a hospital rather than a dentist office. General anesthesia has risks, so it is usually reserved for more complex procedures.

Distraction If medications aren’t your thing or they don’t agree with you, an alternative-type treatment may work. Sometimes, simple distraction techniques are effective at reducing anxiety when you visit the dentist. Some dentists will give you headphones to watch television, or you could bring your own and listen to music instead. Taking a little vacation in your own head by imagining that you are on a beach or playing sports or anywhere else can also be an effective technique, if your imagination skills are strong enough.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment for scores of different ailments, and anxiety is on the list. Explain your situation to the acupuncturist and see if he or she can help.

Counseling In some cases, traditional psychological therapy or counseling can help you overcome your fears and visit the dentist without incident. Counseling will teach you coping strategies and techniques you can use in real life situations. Whatever you learn, practice before you get into the dentist’s chair, so you are well equipped to calm yourself when the time comes.

Counseling If you’re interested, ask your therapist or counselor if group sessions are available to let you meet and associate with other dental anxiety sufferers. Sometimes, meeting people who have similar issues will help you deal with your own more effectively.

Hypnosis Hypnosis is a technique often associated with magicians, but many therapists are qualified to do it, and use it regularly with patients. Basically, hypnosis puts you into a relaxed state and opens your mind to the power of suggestion. Sometimes, hypnosis sessions will result in an anxious patient being able to relax himself enough in the chair to make it through a dental appointment.

Basic Information About Cell Disruption

In many different industries and for many different reasons, the concept of cell disruption is an important process. Here is some basic information about cell disruption so you are equipped with all the general knowledge you need.

Introduction

First, it makes sense to describe the structure of a cell so you can visualize exactly what is being disrupted. The Structure of a Cell All cells have a plasma membrane, and that membrane is the only barrier between the contents of the cell and the environment, when you’re talking about animal cells.

When it comes to plant cells or bacteria, there is an extra cell wall that surrounds the plasma membrane, and this wall is rigid. Cell disruption occurs easier in animal cells than it does in plant cells, because the plant cells have several cellulose layers that the animal cells don’t have. This makes the plant cells quite a bit stronger and more difficult to disrupt. The Structure of a  Cell disruption, which is also known as ‘bacteria cell lysis’ refers to an external force or condition breaking down the contents of a cell. Cell disruption can occur by natural or artificial means, but when it happens artificially, it’s usually because someone or some organization is conducting research. What Is Cell Disruption?

After cell disruption has occurred, the leftover material that contains all of the contents of the destroyed cell is called the ‘lysate’. A substance that encourages cell disruption to happen is called a ‘lysin’. General osmosis that happens inside the cells of plants and animals is one of the more common cell disruption methods in the natural world. What Is Cell Disruption?

In a laboratory setting, there are several call disruption methods that may be used to get the job done. According to Bio Rad, here are some of the most common: Osmotic Lysis – the cells swell up and burst after being suspended in a hypotonic solution. Detergent Lysis – the cells are suspended in a solution containing a detergent to make the cell membrane soluble. Freeze / Thaw – the cells are frozen in liquid nitrogen and then thawed out. Methods

Enzymatic – the cells are suspended in a solution that contains enzymes, designed to digest the cell wall. Another cell disruption method usually follows this one for the best effect. Sonication – this is a harsher cell disruption method where the cells are subject to short bursts of ultrasonic waves. French Press – the cells are subject to shear force when they are forced through a small opening at high pressure. Methods

Cell disruption is used in several different industries on a regular basis, and as part of the regular process. For many products, controlling the particle size and cell disruption is a crucial element in order to produce products that are safe and of high quality. Industries

Here are some of the primary industries where cell disruption equipment is required, according to high shear processor maker, Microfluidics: Pharmaceutical Cosmetics Biotechnology Energy Nutraceuticals & Food Chemical Industries

Cell disruption methods might be used in any of these industries in the lab as part of research, or as part of the manufacturing process to produce a finished product perfectly to spec. Industries

Considering some of the industries that use cell disruption to create their products, the process is very important. Sending out food products or nutritional supplements or pharmaceutical drugs that have flaws is a sure way to lose customers and possibly a whole lot more. In certain industries and with some products, there really is no room for error. Poor cell disruption methods can even affect criminal investigations, as it is a necessary part of the DNA extraction process. Importance

How to use the internet to make money

Self publish books
If you love writing and want to get a book published, Amazon offers a free service called Kindle Direct Publishing. The service allows anyone to self publish books on the Kindle (electronic) bookstore and earn royalties from sales. There are two plans you can choose from — the 35% royalty works across any book sold in any country) while the 70% royalty plans works if you sell in a few select countries. Indian authors can choose to set prices specifically for the Indian bookstore and receive royalty payments in Indian currency as well.
Make & sell your apps
With so many smartphones and tablets, app development can be a very lucrative business. You can learn about developing apps online — there are various tutorials available for free. That's the easy part — the hard part is coming up with an idea that 'clicks'. Once you make an app, submit it to the respective app store, set a price and choose whether you want to earn from inapp advertising. Your earnings, after deducting the appropriate fees, will be paid monthly.
Sell your photos Online
Numerous stock websites like www.shutterstock. com, www.shutterpoint.com and www. istockphoto.com host photographs submitted by members. Depending on the site's policy, you can earn between a 15 to 85% royalty on each sale. The better the quality of photos and the larger your online portfolio, the more you will sell. Usually, each photograph you want to upload will have to be 'selected' by them first — and they usually have strict requirements of what can or cannot go on sale.
Sell old stuff online
An easy way to earn some money on the Internet is by selling old stuff that you have around the house. Websites like www.olx.in, www.quickr.com & http://craigslist.co.in provide a free classifieds platform. You need to create an account, enter the product details, location, the expected price along with some photographs — listing usually go live within a couple of hours. Interested buyers can directly contact you and finalise the sale.
Start an online shop
With some creativity, you can learn to make handicrafts or if you know a wholesale dealer, purchase unique things at low prices. Once you have some stock ready, you can set up an online shop to sell these goods on sites like www.ebay.in or www.indiebazaar.com.
Both sites have a simple signup process. After you get verified as a seller, they provide you with a step-by-step wizard to set your online store (how to add photos & details of items you want to sell).
Work online for money
The internet is full of bogus companies that promise to pay you for work but never will. For instance, all places that offer money to fill surveys or those that require payment up front are scammers. Two popular & reliable places to find work are www. odesk.com and www.elance.com.
Both have a similar system: set up a profile and take tests to prove your proficiency in certain areas. Once done, you'll be listed as a contractor/freelancer and people can hire you for an hourly rate. You can get paid more by working hard, getting better at what you do and getting good feedback (ratings) from your clients.
E-Tutoring
If you are fluent in any subject and have some tutoring experience, you can sign up on websites like www.2tion.net or www.tutorvista.com as an online tutor. The sites require you to create a tutor profile with details such as the subjects in which you are fluent, what classes/courses you want to teach, your experience level, preferred timings for tutions and the remuneration expected.
Earn from Advertising
A reliable way to earn money is from Google AdSense on your blog/website or ads on your YouTube channel. To get started, create a Google AdSense account at www. google.com/adsense. You can use the same account with your blog, website or YouTube channel. To maximise earnings from your blog or website, your objective needs to be to get the maximum number of visitors possible.
Write about what you know and what you're passionate about. On YouTube, make sure that your videos are original and interesting. Promote your channel to get more views. Apart from views, your objective should also be to get more people to like/favourite your video and to subscribe to your channel. The build up will be slow and Google only makes payments once your balance crosses $100, so don't get disheartened. Persistent efforts pay off in the long run.

History of the Integration of Mobile Phones

History of the Mobile Phone

lIn 1970 Amos Joel of Bell Labs invented "call handoff" that allowed a mobile phone user to travel through several cells during the same conversation
lMartin Cooper of Motorola is widely considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for handheld use in a non-vehicle setting
lUsing a modern, if somewhat heavy portable handset, Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973
lFully automatic cellular networks were first introduced in the early to mid-1980s (the 1G generation)
lUntil the late 1980s, most mobile phones were too large to be carried in a jacket pocket, so they were usually permanently installed in vehicles as car phones

SMS (Short Message System)

lSMS was being considered as a feature for mobile phones as early as 1985
lThe first commercial text message wasn't sent until 1992 from a personal computer to a mobile phone
lThe first phone to phone SMS was claimed to have been sent by Riku Pihkonen, an engineering student at Nokia, in 1993.
lInitial growth was slow, with customers in 1995 sending on average only 0.4 messages per GSM customer per month
lA whole new alphabet emerged because SMS messages took a long time to enter and were quite abrupt as people attempted to say as much as possible with as few keystrokes. Abbreviations such as 'C U L8er' for 'See you later' sprung up for time saving and trendiness

Ringtones

lIt all more or less started with the famous 'Nokia Tune', which is a 13 note rendering of Francisco Tarrega's masterpiece, Gran Vals. Tarrega was a 19th-century Spanish musician.
lAround this time all ringtones were monoponic, meaning they could only play one note at a time.
lOne of the first commercial ringtone service available was the finnish operator, Radiolinja´s "jukebox" service in 1999.
lThe year 2002 is a major milestone in ringtone history. Nokia and other phone companies adopted the MIDI standard that enabled richer and more realistic polyphonic sounds, which is multiple notes being played at one time.
lModern mobile phones can play MP3 files and have higher quality ringtones than ever before.

Camera Phone

lA camera phone is a mobile phone which has a camera built-in and allows the user to share pictures and video with anyone instantly.
lThe first complete camera phone was built by Philippe Kahn in 1997. The first commercial camera phone complete with infrastructure was the J-SH04, made by Sharp Corporation with the Sha-Mail (Picture-Mail in Japanese) infrastructure and marketed by J-Phone in Japan.  In North America, the first camera phone was manufactured by Sanyo and launched by Sprint with the PictureMail infrastructure.
Camera phones have become widely used because they are cheap, convenient, and portable, and are now a staple of the majority of cell phones.

Bluetooth

l1998 The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is formed and officially adopts the project name “Bluetooth” as the name of the technology
l1999 The Bluetooth 1.0 is released
l2000 The first Bluetooth consumer product hits the market - a Bluetooth headset and phone adapter from Ericsson
lBluetooth wireless technology is a short-range communications technology intended to replace the cables connecting portable and/or fixed devices
lBluetooth enables user to have an affordable and easy way to have a hands free experience when using mobile phones.

How to Multi-Home

What is Multi-Homing?
 Multi-homing is the process of selecting, provisioning, and installing a redundant connection to the Internet. Could be the same provider, or a different provider.

Why Multi-Home?
Slow is 1,000,000% better than dead. You may be out of bandwidth. And Telco circuits die. Routers die. Providers’ networks fail. Different networks have better performance to different sites.

A Multi-Homed Architecture
 Ideally, take advantage of the opportunity to multi-home to remove all single points of failure in your network. Use - Multiple providers, unless your current provider will let you have cheap backup Multiple routers Multiple telco vendors

Multi-Homed Architecture
Two routers, each with a different WAN connection from a different telco vendor. Use HSRP or VRRP internally to make both routers look like one “virtual” router. Eventually, multiple providers. Upcoming Boardwatch article with configs.

How the Internet Works
Well, it breaks more than it works but when it does work - The Internet is a network of networks. Each network (called Autonomous System) on the Internet announces “routes”, which are lists of the IP addresses of the boxes on their network. You need to be able to send packets *to*, and get packets *from*, everywhere.

How to optimize MySQL DataBase

MySQL optimization. Here we will give some quick help on optimizing MySQL database performance.

Requirements: MySQL.

One of the factors with the biggest impact on database performance is not the MySQL settings, but your queries! Make sure you have optimized all your queries first, and have created the right indexes on your tables for MySQL to use.

A useful MySQL command for this is EXPLAIN. If you use EXPLAIN SELECT * FROM table WHERE field="something" , MySQL will tell you how many rows it needs to search, and what index it can use for this, among other things.

After you have optimized your queries and created indexes, you can start tweaking your my.cnf MySQL configuration file. Keep in mind that if you optimize or change something you should be able to benchmark it to make sure it will actually increase the performance.

Here is a sample my.cnf file (MySQL 4.1) for use on a dual processor server with 2GB of RAM memory:

# The following options will be passed to all MySQL clients
[client]
socket=/tmp/mysql.sock

# The MySQL server
[mysqld]
tmpdir=/tmp
socket=/tmp/mysql.sock
skip-locking
skip-networking
skip-name-resolve

server-id=1

max_connections=500
key_buffer_size=384M
max_allowed_packet=16M
table_cache=256
sort_buffer_size=2M
read_buffer_size=2M
